What Is a Model Test Shoot?
A model test shoot is a creative collaboration between a model and a photographer — sometimes with a stylist or makeup artist — designed to create fresh portfolio images. It’s a relaxed space to experiment and build your look without the pressure of a commercial job.
Why Do Test Shoots Matter?
Test shoots help you stay relevant and confident in front of the camera. They let you explore new looks and give agencies fresh material to share with clients. On portfolio platforms like Portfoliopad, your test images often determine whether brands click on your profile or move on.
Most test shoots are simple. You’ll bring a few clean outfits — denim, basics, and neutral looks — plus simple hair and makeup supplies. My guides explain what works best for each test concept so you arrive ready to shoot.
Some are, some aren’t. Many are TFP (“trade for portfolio”) where everyone benefits from the results. Paid tests are usually with established photographers who already shoot for agencies. If you’re doing a free collaboration, just make sure the photographer has experience and solid references.
How Long Does a Test Shoot Take?
A typical test shoot lasts 2–4 hours and includes 3–4 looks. Newer models might take longer to warm up, while experienced models move through sets faster.
Do Models Get Paid for Test Shoots?
Usually no — these are collaborations meant to build portfolios. If a photographer specifically approaches you for their own project, you can discuss payment, but most test shoots are mutually beneficial creative sessions.
I shoot mostly TFP test shoots with new and signed models in NYC. If you’re developing your book or need updated portfolio images, feel free to reach out. I’m always open to creative collaborations that help both models and photographers grow.
